How To Clean Glass Shower Doors The Easy Way

I love Pinterest because of stuff like this.  It really shouldn't be life changing, but it is.

I have very hard water where I live.  My shower doors are usually covered in a gross combination of hard water deposits and soap scum.  I'm really embarrassed to show you my "before" photos, but you must see them to truly appreciate what a miracle this do-it-yourself cleaner is. 

In the past, even after I'd cleaned the glass, it wouldn't look much better because the glass cleaner just couldn't cut through this caked on crud.

Can you believe it!  This stuff works!  You're dying to know the secret aren't you?  Well here it is.

I found this DIY cleaner on here and here and it is fantastic because it works!

Here's the recipe:

8 oz. (1 cup) of warm vinegar

8 oz. ( 1 cup) of Dawn 

That's it!  I put the vinegar in the microwave for about two minutes to get it warm.  Then mix the vinegar and the Dawn in a spray bottle.  One cup of Dawn seems like a lot to me, but I guess you need that much to cut through the scum.  It makes sense.  If it can cut through grease and baked on food, it should be able to cut through yucky shower scum!

I sprayed the Dawn and vinegar mixture on the glass and scrubbed with a sponge.  I really didn't have to scrub hard or for very long.  That stubborn stuff came right off!  I had a bucket of clean water to wipe off the soap suds.  When I was done, there still seamed to be a little bit of residue on the glass so I just used the glass cleaner I usually use to give the doors a final wipe.  Now my shower doors look as good as new!

What is Dawn?

Dawn is a brand of liquid soap used to wash dishes.

Will a different brand of soap work?

I used Dawn and didn't test any other brands.  If you try another brand and it works, leave a comment and let me know!

I forgot to warm up the vinegar.  Will it still work?

Yes.  After cleaning the glass the first time, I had plenty of cleaning solution left over.  I used the left over solution a few months later and didn't warm it in the microwave.  It still worked!
