Dear Luke, We Need To Talk by John Moe
I received this book from Blogging For Books for this review.
Dear Luke, We Need To Talk is a comic look at popular culture by John Moe. In this humorous book, well-known characters and personalities from pop culture are re-imagined. Written from the characters' point of view are letters, emails, texts, notes and more from some of your favorite songs, TV shows and movies. This collection of fictional correspondence provides some insight into the characters' private thoughts as well as their back stories. Some of my favorites include:
- Star Trek captain's log entries
- Don Draper's cocktail recipe notecards
- Diary entry of an obscure and unpopular student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
- A letter from Gunther to Rachel from Friends
- A memo to Dana Scully from Fox Moulder of the X-files
Not only did I think this book was funny and entertaining, I was really impressed by John Moe's creativity. Each piece of writing is in a different format from personal diary entries, letters, notes, etc. and each is written from a unique point of view. I thought this was a very silly, but enjoyable read. However, this book probably isn't for you if you don't have a large reference of pop culture. If you haven't watched the TV shows or movies and aren't familiar with the songs that are referenced, you won't get the jokes. This book also may not be for you if you don't like adult language and adult humor.
